ISE Digital assesses speaking, listening, reading and writing in up to 105 minutes, including its levelling stage.
Most ISE Digital results are available in 3–5 days. Diagnostic feedback helps you identify areas to develop.
ISE Digital reports scores linked to CEFR A1–C2; a below-A1 outcome is also possible.
Tasks reflect language used in study and work. GESE offers a speaking-and-listening route through a conversation with an examiner.

The main difference is the skills assessed. ISE Digital covers reading, writing, listening and speaking. GESE focuses on speaking and listening.
| What to compare | ISE Digital | GESE |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Integrated Skills in English — Digital | Graded Examinations in Spoken English |
| Skills tested | Reading, writing, listening and speaking | Speaking and listening; no reading or writing modules |
| Exam format | All four modules on a computer at an exam centre, in one sitting | A one-to-one conversation with an examiner |
| Exam length | Up to 105 minutes, including the levelling stage and instructions | 5–25 minutes, depending on the grade |
| English levels | A multi-level test covering CEFR A1–C2; a below-A1 result is also possible | 12 grades covering pre-A1 to C2; choose the grade suited to your level and goal |
| Use for your studies | Evidence of all four skills for a college or university course that accepts ISE Digital | Evidence of spoken communication for a school or programme that accepts GESE, or to mark progress in your learning |
CEFR is the framework used to describe language ability, from beginner to advanced. A GESE grade describes an English level, not a school year.
Applying to college or university? Check your course’s English requirements first. If it requires evidence of reading and writing as well as speaking and listening, GESE alone does not assess all those skills. Confirm the accepted exam version and minimum score or grade before booking.
Working on spoken English? GESE can help you demonstrate speaking and listening at a chosen grade. Ask your teacher which grade matches your current skills.

Applying somewhere that names a specific English test? Check that requirement before choosing. GESE and ISE Digital are different exams, and academic recognition is separate from visa acceptance.
Trinity’s recognition directory lists institutions and programmes across these 54 countries and regions. Open a destination to check the listed organisations.
